About Us
Therapy Dogs Nationwide came into being in early 2016 and is managed entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers.
Volunteers with a Special Bond
Our volunteers have the unique privilege of working with their own temperament-tested Therapy Dogs, with some having over 10 years of experience. Their focus is always on caring for and supporting people in the community.
A Legacy of Animal-Assisted Therapy
The use of animals—especially dogs—in therapeutic settings is not new. Dogs have been part of the care sector for over 40 years. Many of our volunteers have connections to Lesley Scott-Ordish, a pioneer of the concept of visiting care homes with personal pet dogs.
Wide-Ranging Experience and Settings
Our volunteers bring expertise from many areas of therapy work and regularly visit a variety of establishments, including:
– Mainstream and Special Needs Schools
– Hospitals and Hospices
– Nursing and Care Homes
– Prisons and Secure Units
Reaching People from All Walks of Life
Through visits with our calm, friendly, temperament-tested dogs, we meet people from all backgrounds—many of whom are facing illness, loneliness, anxiety, or depression. Each visit is a chance to offer comfort and connection.
Helping People Overcome Fear of Dogs
Many adults and children have a deep-rooted fear of dogs that affects their daily lives. We work alongside healthcare professionals to help reduce and even eliminate these fears, creating positive, healing experiences.
Supporting Children Through the Paws & Read Programme
Our Paws & Read programme helps children feel more confident about reading aloud by encouraging them to read stories to a Therapy Dog.
These dogs are great listeners—they don’t judge or interrupt—and their calming presence helps improve literacy, confidence, and behaviour in a gentle, supportive way.
