Bringing Comfort, Connection, and Joy

Care Home Therapy Dogs

Inspired by love and driven by compassion, our therapy dogs bring comfort, joy, and meaningful connection to residents in care homes across the UK.

Inspired by Love, Driven by Compassion

The concept of therapy dogs was first inspired over 40 years ago when a relative of Lesley Scott-Ordish, the founder, had to move into a care home and part with their beloved dog—a heartbreaking experience. Decades later, Therapy Dogs Nationwide (TDN) continues to make a difference, with hundreds of our volunteers and their dogs visiting care homes across the country every week.

Moments That Matter

For residents, a therapy dog is more than just a friendly visitor—it’s a source of joy, companionship, and mental stimulation. Many residents eagerly anticipate their visits, finding comfort in stroking a dog’s fur or simply enjoying their presence. In dementia care, therapy dogs can spark long-term memories of beloved pets from childhood, offering a topic of conversation that lingers long after the visit ends. These moments of recognition and connection bring immeasurable value to both residents and their families.

Reaching Hearts and Hands

Beyond emotional wellbeing, therapy dogs can encourage physical movement and interaction, whether it’s reaching out for a gentle touch or engaging in light activities. Care staff and relatives often witness firsthand the positive impact—seeing their loved ones more engaged, uplifted, and at ease.
